What is a digital music box?
These music boxes feature a USB device or other electronic components, rather than a mechanical movement, to play any song or music of your choice. Usually, this is for songs not on our regular and standard lists.
How is a digital music box different from a traditional box?
There are several differences between USB / Bluetooth music boxes and traditional music boxes. The main difference between the two is how they play their music. Digital boxes typically include a USB device or other electronic component that plays songs through a speaker on the music box. In contrast, traditional music boxes utilize a mechanical piece that physically plucks out the notes of a song as it rotates.
Because recordable music boxes store their music on a USB device, you get an exact replica of the full and entire song instead of a minimalist version with only 18 - 144 notes, which only plays a short part. You can also store and play a much larger selection of music and swap out songs whenever you want. Digital music boxes can hold about 25 complete (~100 MB) MP3 songs, whereas a mechanical movement only plays a portion of a single song or a maximum of three parts of a song.
How do I customize the songs on my music box?
Customizing your USB music box is simple with one of our several options:
- List the Artist and Song Title of each song you wish to include in your box
- Link the YouTube video of the songs you want
- Drag and drop the MP3 files of the songs you want from your computer
- Upload the songs on your own when you receive your box
Uploading the songs on your own means connecting the USB device to your computer using the included cord and dragging the files onto the device's storage. All digital music box orders come with simple instructions. We are always here to assist you.
How does Bluetooth work with your USB music boxes?
At Music Box Attic, we strive to provide as much versatility as possible in all our music boxes. It is as simple as connecting any regular Bluetooth device and doesn’t require any specific app to download.
Are there different USB options?
Not all digital music boxes are created equal. We have several module types available, including:
- Type 1 (L1): Lid On/Off Sensor, USB Connection, Rechargeable
- Type 2 (L2): Lid On/Off Sensor, USB Connection, Rechargeable, Additional On/Off Switch
- Type 3 (L3): Lid On/Off Sensor, USB Connection, Rechargeable, On/Off Switch, Volume Controls

What are the pros and cons of a Bluetooth or USB music box?
PRO’S
- The main advantage of a USB box is that you can have any song, sound, or recording loaded and played back. These songs are usually uploaded as a full version and can be played back with lyrics or as a music box conversion sound without lyrics. The options are limitless. Any song version can be loaded on a custom module music box. With a Bluetooth music box, you can play any song directly from any Bluetooth-capable device. A mechanical movement always has a predetermined tune and cannot be customized once created.
- For USB models, you can change the song(s) as you please. These recordable music boxes come with simple and easy instructions on how to do that at home.
- These music boxes will play entire songs, not just a snippet of a tune, as all wind-up mechanical movements do.
- You can have multiple songs and create a playlist if you’d like.
CON’S
- With a digital music box, you don’t get the nostalgic feeling of a wind-up mechanical movement when you crank up and see the small teeth on the comb hit the cylinder to make the traditional mechanical movement sound.
- A mechanical movement will eventually outlast the custom module electronic device, but it is easily updated or replaced. Our custom module music boxes come with lifetime warranties, and we stand behind the product forever, so you don’t have to worry about passing them down from generation to generation.
