7 Ways to Feel More Refreshed in the Morning

7 Ways to Feel More Refreshed in the Morning

Posted by Boris Muchnik on May 25th 2021

What you do in the morning usually sets the tone for the rest of your day. Waking up groggy and grumpy is no way to start your day, but sometimes it happens! If you find that you’re constantly waking up feeling like you could use a few more hours of sleep, you might just need to adjust your morning routine.

Here are 7 things you can do in the morning to make you feel more refreshed, alert, and ready to take on the day:

1.Drink water

Oftentimes when we are tired, we’re actually just dehydrated! We lose a significant amount of water while we sleep, due to breathing, urine formation, and sweating, so it’s very important to replenish our bodies first thing in the morning. Make a habit of putting a full glass of water next to your bed every night and drinking the entire thing as soon as you wake up.

2.Exercise

Some light exercise in the morning will get your blood pumping, metabolism going, and endorphins flowing! You don’t have to make your morning workout very intense. Just a 20- or 30-minute walk will do.

3.Wake up to music you enjoyTraditional alarm tones are loud and startling. While this might be good for jolting you out of your sleep, it can make your brain and body feel very stressed out. Setting your alarm to music that makes you feel good will help you feel refreshed and happier in the morning.

4.Eat a healthy breakfast

Try to consume as little sugar and simple carbs (white bread) in the morning as you can. It’s okay to put sugar in your coffee and grab a bagel, but make sure you balance that out with some protein, fiber, and vitamins - especially B12! Vitamin B12 helps us keep our natural energy levels up. Consider a B12 supplement, especially if you follow a vegan or dairy-free diet.

5.Let the light in

Our bodies have natural circadian rhythms that are wired to be alert while the sun is up and to slow down when it’s dark out. If you have blackout curtains in your bedroom, open them up at night so the sunlight pours in when you wake up. If you work nights, do the opposite! Close your blackout curtains during the day and consider equipping your home with lightbulbs that have been designed to mimic sunlight.

6.Skip the snooze

You might think that snoozing your alarm 5 times gives you more sleep, but you’re really just getting small increments of poor-quality sleep. Instead of hitting snooze a bunch of times, set your alarm for the time you usually get out of bed. This will give you more time to rest so you can get out of bed feeling refreshed.

7.Create a calming nighttime routine

If you find that you have trouble falling asleep at night, that might be the main reason you feel tired in the morning, you just aren’t getting enough sleep! Start a calming nighttime routine before bed that includes things like drinking decaf tea, taking a bath, meditating, listening to calming music, or reading. Try to avoid any activity that involves looking at a screen.

A music box is the perfect addition to your morning and nightly routine. The cheery music emanating from a beautifully crafted box will help soothe you to sleep and rejuvenate you in the morning.
